The EAJC welcomes the adoption of the definition of antisemitism by the Global Imams Council.

The Global Imams Council (GIC), which represents over 1,000 Muslim clerics globally, has adopted the working definition of antisemitism formulated by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).

This decision was reached at the request of Elan Carr, the US Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism, alongside other public figures concerned by the global rise in anti-Jewish sentiment. Effective immediately, the IHRA definition shall be binding for all GIC members, including all affiliated mosques, centers, institutions, and organizations of the Council.

Dr. Haim Ben Yakov, Director General of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, welcomed the GIC's decision, stating that it represents another significant step toward eradicating antisemitism within the Islamic world. "Recently, Albania, a nation with a prominent Muslim majority, adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism, and now the Global Imams Council has followed suit. The GIC’s adoption of this definition marks a milestone in interfaith dialogue and opens a new chapter in relations between the Jewish and Muslim worlds.
