Moscow and St. Petersburg to host screenings of the documentary 'The Markish Case'

On January 17 at the International Memorial in Moscow and on January 21 at the Anna Akhmatova Museum at the Fountain House in St. Petersburg, presentations and premiere screenings of the documentary series "The Markish Case" directed by Elena Kogan (Israel) will take place.

"The Markish Case" is a unique six-part documentary project produced by the Babel Bookstore (Tel Aviv) and the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. It centers on the firsthand account of David Markish — writer, journalist, public figure, author of over fifteen novels, and son of Peretz Markish, one of the leaders of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee. Peretz Markish, a prominent Yiddish poet, novelist, and playwright, was executed in 1952 alongside other distinguished figures of Jewish culture as part of the Soviet prosecution of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee.

His son, David Markish, has lived in Israel since the early 1970s. He has received numerous Israeli and international literary awards, and many of his books have been translated into Hebrew and European languages.

At the film presentations in Moscow and St. Petersburg, audiences will view an episode of the documentary dedicated to the dissolution of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, and will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion with the film's producer, co-owner of the Babel Bookstore and writer Evgeny Kogan.

The screening is part of a joint initiative by the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, the International Memorial, the GULAG History Museum, and the "Last Address" project to commemorate the repressed members of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee. As part of this initiative, the exhibition "Bromberg's Violin: Victims of Anti-Jewish Campaigns in the USSR, 1920–1950" is currently on display at the International Memorial.
