The headquarters of the Croatian Jewish community has sustained severe damage following a powerful earthquake

March 22, 2020 — The building of the Beit Israel Jewish Community and School in the Croatian capital, Zagreb, was damaged by two powerful earthquakes, which caused destruction in downtown Zagreb and partially collapsed the spire of the Zagreb Cathedral.

The Chairman of the Beit Israel Jewish Community in Croatia, Rabbi Kotel Da-Don, informed the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress that no members of the community were injured in the earthquake. 

The epicenter of the natural disaster was located near Zagreb. The residents of the Croatian capital felt the first tremors, measuring magnitude 5.3, at 6:24 AM local time. Less than half an hour later, a second earthquake occurred with a magnitude of 5.0.

“The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress remains in close contact with the community leaders in Croatia. We must mobilize all available resources and support one another during these challenging times,” stated the Director General of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, Dr. Haim Ben-Yakov.
