Promotion and Distribution Support for "Sobibor"

The film is based on real events that took place during the Second World War in the Nazi death camp Sobibor, located in occupied Poland. It depicts how Soviet Army Lieutenant Alexander Aronovich Pechersky, who was captured and sent to the camp, managed in just three weeks to plan and execute, junto with a group of Soviet prisoners of war, an unprecedented and successful uprising of Jewish prisoners from various European countries. On October 14, 1943, approximately three hundred prisoners escaped from the camp, although most of them subsequently perished. All prisoners remaining in Sobibor were executed, and the camp itself was soon demolished.

“We hope that the film will inspire audiences to learn more about the history of the heroic and successful uprising of the Sobibor concentration camp prisoners, which stands as a unique event in the history of the Second World War. Today, as the history of the Holocaust is frequently distorted in pursuit of cynical political interests, and with fewer and fewer witnesses of those horrific events remaining among us, it is more important than ever to preserve the memory of the prisoners' feat, led by Alexander Pechersky, whose courage paved their path to freedom,” stated EAJC President Michael Mirilashvili.

The film “Sobibor” marks the directorial debut of the prominent Russian actor Konstantin Khabensky, who also performed the lead role of the Soviet Jewish officer, Alexander Pechersky. The film also stars Christopher Lambert, Maria Kozhevnikova, Felice Jankell, Dainius Kazlauskas, Wolfgang Cerny, and others.

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress provided financial support to the Pechersky Foundation to aid in the promotion and international distribution of the film “Sobibor,” which was released on May 3, 2018.
