One of the key milestones in the Jewish revival in Moldova was the establishment of a Jewish national-cultural autonomy. This came about as a result of the state's decision, prompted by the inter-ethnic conflict in the Moldavian SSR at the turn of the 1990s, to institute a specific framework for national self-organization for all national minorities residing in the country. This development was further supported by the pro-European policies of moderate circles that came to power in Chișinău by the mid-1990s. Three defining characteristics of this national-cultural autonomy can be identified: its codification in law, the existence of institutions addressing the educational, cultural, and religious needs of the community, and the strengthening of national identity. Another significant factor in the nation's Jewish revival has been the support of community projects by local small and medium-sized enterprises.
