The Soviet Anti-Semitic Campaigns: Methods and Motives

Special Edition Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Assassination of Solomon Mikhoels, Chairman of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee (JAC), and the 70th Anniversary of the "Doctors' Plot."

On the night of January 12–13, 1948, the world-renowned Soviet actor and director was assassinated near Minsk. The leader of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee—the informal "ministry of Jewish affairs" in Stalin's USSR—was liquidated by state security agents in a special operation. The assassination was disguised as an accident. It was later revealed that the order to eliminate Mikhoels originated from the "very top." Other leaders of the JAC would subsequently be sentenced to death by firing squad. Exactly five years later, on January 13, 1953, the TASS news agency reported on "the arrest of a group of saboteur-doctors," and the Pravda newspaper published an editorial titled "Vile Spies and Murderers under the Guise of Professors and Doctors."

Guest: Dr. Haim Ben Yakov, Director General of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress.
