The EAJC condemns the acts of vandalism at the Chisinau Jewish Cemetery.

Unknown vandals have desecrated the old Jewish cemetery in Chișinău. For two consecutive nights, perpetrators destroyed Jewish tombstones and left graffiti depicting swastikas and other offensive symbols.

This is by no means the first act of vandalism recorded at the Chișinău Jewish cemetery. However, despite public outrage and indignation within the Jewish Community, the authorities remain inactive. The vandals who previously desecrated the Jewish cemetery in Chișinău were never apprehended, which undoubtedly emboldens them and their followers to commit further unlawful acts.

The Jewish Community of Moldova is deeply concerned about the situation at the cemetery, as well as the misappropriation of funds allocated for the Museum of Jewish History and the maintenance and security of the cemetery. Furthermore, the necessary amendments to the Criminal Code and the Law on Freedom of Expression—which would penalize the promotion of Nazism, the glorification of Nazi war criminals, and the use of Nazi symbols—have not been enacted.

The leadership of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress expresses its sincere condolences to the families of those whose graves were so systematically desecrated, and urges the General Mayor of Chișinău, Ion Ceban, and the Government of Moldova to deploy all necessary resources to counter antisemitism.

EAJC Director General Dr. Haim Ben Yakov stated: "This appalling act of vandalism in Chișinău must not go unpunished. Moldovan law enforcement authorities are obligated to make every effort to apprehend the vandals repeatedly desecrating the Jewish cemetery and impose the most severe punishment available. The EAJC calls for a significant increase in security at the cemetery to prevent further destruction."
