The EAJC condemns the attack on the synagogue in Yerevan

On Tuesday night, October 3, media outlets reported an attack on a synagogue in the Armenian capital, Yerevan. According to published reports, the building's windows were shattered, and its walls were defaced with paint. Israeli press sources indicate that a group calling itself the "Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia" claimed responsibility for the incident. In a statement accompanying the attack, Jews were labeled as "enemies of the Armenian nation."

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress strongly condemns this act of vandalism and antisemitism, and urges Armenian law enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. It is imperative to determine the true motives of those behind the threats and the vandals who desecrated the synagogue, identify the perpetrators, and hold them legally accountable. We call upon the Armenian authorities to take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Commenting on the incident, EAJC Director General Dr. Chaim Ben Yakov stated: "The rhetoric employed by the vandals in their public threat to the Jews of Armenia constitutes a critical red flag for the global Jewish community. In the past century, similar slogans were used to justify the most heinous crimes against the Jewish people. Those who employ such actions and language to intimidate and threaten must not be allowed to continue committing crimes with impunity. The vandals who desecrated the synagogue building—as well as the authors of the antisemitic statement—must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
