The EAJC welcomes the adoption of the law on countering antisemitism in Ukraine

On September 22, during the plenary session of the sixth session of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the IX convocation, Draft Bill No. 5109 "On Preventing and Combating Antisemitism in Ukraine" was adopted. Earlier this year, members of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights voted unanimously to clear this draft bill for the agenda of the regular session of the Verkhovna Rada.

The adopted amendments establish civil and criminal liability for manifestations of antisemitism, such as Holocaust denial, the production, distribution, and use of any antisemitic materials, symbols, and imagery, as well as incitement to antisemitism.

"The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress welcomes this decision of the Verkhovna Rada. We hope that this legislation will contribute to reducing antisemitic sentiment in Ukraine and will serve as a foundation for building a modern democratic society based on the principles of respect for ethnic minorities, mutual solidarity, and remembrance of the lessons of the past," commented EAJC President Dr. Mikhail Mirilashvili.
