The EAJC condemns the provocative stunt by Israeli poet Yonatan Geffen, who published a photograph of himself wearing a T-shirt that read: "All a suicide bomber needs is a hug." Under no circumstances, and particularly in Israel, where Islamic terrorism has caused immense suffering, should the actions of terrorists be condoned or excused. This is precisely the case where the actions of a creative individual cannot be justified by the need for freedom of expression or the principle of artistic freedom. In addition to condoning terrorism with all the severe implications that follow, this act represents a direct insult to the families of terror victims.
Through his actions, Geffen has insulted thousands of his fellow citizens. A respectable and conscientious individual must not permit themselves to publish material of this nature. This is not merely a tasteless joke; it is a cynical attempt to garner attention through cheap sensationalism.
