The leaders of the EAJC condemn the deeply concerning incident that occurred on January 1st in the capital of Armenia. A neo-Nazi group consisting of 15-20 individuals organized a march through the center of Yerevan, chanting Nazi slogans and performing Nazi salutes.
The Congress leadership views with deep concern the rising number of antisemitic incidents in Armenia. The President of the EAJC addressed the Prime Minister of Armenia in a personal letter:
"Mr. Prime Minister,
Permit me to convey to you our profound concern regarding the neo-Nazi march that took place in Yerevan on January 1st.
In today's world, driven by a lack of historical awareness and the revision of history, the horrific crimes committed by the Nazis against the Jewish people and all of humanity are being morally reassessed by certain extremist groups.
However, the marginal nature of this phenomenon must not mislead us. It is a dangerous trend that must be addressed at its very inception.
Nazi ideology, thoroughly permeated by virulent antisemitism, poses a threat not only to Jewish communities. Ideologies of hatred and racial supremacy ultimately destabilize society itself and threaten its foundational stability.
Therefore, the growth of such movements must not be allowed to proceed unchecked. This is of paramount importance now, as we observe a significant rise in antisemitic sentiment globally, where hostile rhetoric can rapidly escalate into acts of violence.
We urge you to take decisive action against this dangerous phenomenon and stand ready to offer our full support in this matter."
The march was organized to commemorate the birth of Garegin Nzhdeh, who collaborated with the Nazis during World War II. The EAJC strongly opposes historical revisionism and the glorification of Nazi collaborators, regardless of the motivations behind their actions. This sets a dangerous precedent and establishes a slippery slope that threatens to further legitimize Nazi ideology. Society must remain unequivocal in its condemnation of individuals who collaborated with absolute evil.
