The EAJC mourns the passing of Rabbi Menachem Hacohen

Rabbi Menachem Hacohen, a prominent spiritual leader, public figure, scholar, and author of numerous works, has passed away at the age of 92.

Born in Jerusalem in 1932, his journey spanned military service, active participation in the landmark events of Israel's founding and development, and decades of public and educational activity within the independent Jewish state. He served as the rabbi of the Moshavim Movement, directed the spiritual leadership of the Histadrut General Federation of Labour, was a member of Knesset, founded the Sapir Center for Jewish Education and Culture in the Old City of Jerusalem, served as Chief Rabbi of Romania, and authored books dedicated to Jewish tradition and history.

For the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, Rabbi Hacohen was a long-time colleague and partner in various initiatives, including the Limmud educational festival. He dedicated particular efforts to integrating Jews from the former Soviet Union into international Jewish structures, strengthening Jewish unity, and developing Jewish education, which he regarded as the cornerstone of Jewish identity.

EAJC President Dr. Michael Mirilashvili noted:

“The passing of Rabbi Menachem Hacohen is a profound loss for the entire Jewish people. We have lost not only a spiritual guide and public leader, but also a cherished colleague who collaborated with the EAJC for many years on educational and social projects. His life stands as a testament to service, the pursuit of unity, and dedication to the future of the Jewish community. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”

The EAJC extends its deepest condolences to the family of Rabbi Hacohen, his friends, colleagues, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
