The EAJC extends its condolences on the passing of Ida Nudel

The leadership of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress deeply mourns the passing of Ida Nudel, an outstanding human rights defender, prominent activist of the Zionist movement in the USSR, and recipient of the Ze'ev Jabotinsky Award "For Outstanding Personal Contribution to the Struggle for the Rights of the Jewish People," at the age of 90.

Born in 1931 in Novorossiysk, USSR, Ida Nudel applied for an exit visa to Israel in 1971, which was denied, resulting in the loss of her employment. In 1978, following a public demonstration where she displayed a poster demanding her right to emigrate from the USSR, she was convicted of "malicious hooliganism" and sentenced to exile, which she served in the Tomsk Region.

Following widespread international campaigns in her support, she was released in 1982. In 1987, she successfully immigrated to Israel, where she continued her advocacy and dedicated herself to assisting new immigrants.
