The Director General of the EAJC Will Attend the Memorial Evening for Baruch Podolsky

EAJC Director General Dr. Chaim Ben Yakov will attend a memorial evening in honor of Dr. Baruch Podolsky (1940–2011) in Jerusalem on September 5.

The memorial event is dedicated to the release of a reprint of Dr. Baruch Podolsky's book "The History of Writing" (Jerusalem: "Philobiblon", 2018). Other participants in the evening include Lidia Podolskaya, Leonid Korol, Rabbi Yosef Mendelevich, Igor Temkin, among others.

Baruch Podolsky (February 18, 1940, Moscow — February 21, 2011, Holon) was an Israeli linguist, lexicographer, TV and radio host, lecturer, and science popularizer, as well as a leading specialist in Hebrew and Semitic languages. He authored the historical "Brief Hebrew Grammar", the "Comprehensive Hebrew-Russian-Hebrew Dictionary", the "Yiddish-Russian Dictionary", the "Amharic-Hebrew Dictionary", the largest online Hebrew-Russian-Hebrew dictionary, and a series of popular science books.

Dr. Podolsky was born in the Soviet Union. In 1958, along with his parents, he was arrested for establishing contacts with officials of the Israeli Embassy and for studying Hebrew, on charges of "anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda exploiting national prejudices" and "participation in an anti-Soviet organization." He served a five-year sentence in the Mordovian labor camps (Dubravlag). In 1967, he was sentenced to an additional two years for Zionist activities. Following many years of refusal, he repatriated to Israel with his wife Lidia in 1971.
