An Address to the Jewish Communities and Organizations of the Euro-Asian Region

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the globe, Dr. Mikhail Mirilashvili, President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, addressed the Jewish communities and organizations of the Euro-Asian region:

Dear Friends,

The pandemic has shaken the world with its unpredictability. Before our eyes, illusions are being shattered, new priorities are being established, and complex challenges are arising. 

Nevertheless, the threat of the coronavirus spread has not paralyzed the operations of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. On the contrary, the emergency has provided a new impetus to mobilize resources and unite people. In this challenging moment, it is vital to recognize that together, we possess the capacity to withstand even the most formidable forces of nature.

The EAJC leadership team comprises prominent philanthropists and public figures, many of whom possess deeply rooted knowledge of the activities of Jewish communities and organizations across the Euro-Asian region.

The EAJC leadership maintains constant communication with regional Jewish leaders, enabling us to monitor closely how COVID-19 affects Jewish life in the member states of the Congress. We also recognize that the world is only beginning to comprehend the long-term consequences of this pandemic.

In response to these rapidly shifting circumstances, EAJC leadership is committed to making forward-looking decisions. In particular, we rely on the findings of the comprehensive sociological study "Jews of Post-Soviet Euro-Asia," which was initiated by the EAJC. 

The indicative data on the current state and prospects of Jewish life in the region, obtained through this large-scale survey, serves to define the key priority areas for the Congress.

Assisting the Vulnerable and Needy

Social projects within the Euro-Asian region have faced significant financial and organizational difficulties due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, many have intensified their efforts in an endeavor to support individuals during this critical period. Following our established tradition, EAJC leaders have stepped forward to provide emergency assistance to address these urgent issues.

Supporting Key Areas of Community Activity

Among the most significant conclusions of the "Jews of Post-Soviet Euro-Asia" study is the recognition of Jewish communities as a primary source of Jewish identity and the essential vehicle for preserving and developing Jewish life in the region. Currently, the Congress leadership strives to maintain flexibility and respond promptly to the challenges confronting these communities. With the world gripped by the pandemic, we must collectively coordinate our efforts to ensure that community life in the region remains resilient. 

Combating Antisemitism

Regrettably, we have recently observed an increase in antisemitic occurrences across various parts of the Euro-Asian region. The EAJC continues to monitor and draw public attention to such incidents. We resolutely call upon the state leaders of the Euro-Asian region to take a firm stance and implement concrete measures to combat this shameful phenomenon. Our objective is to prevent any further escalation of antisemitism in the region.

The Digitalization of Jewish Life 

During these times, the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, along with numerous organizations operating with EAJC support, has strengthened its commitment to elevating its online presence to a new level of quality. The new website of the Congress features an "EAJC Online" section, offering films, educational courses, lectures, opinion pieces, and various materials from the Institute for Euro-Asian Jewish Studies. In partnership with the Shamir Publishing House, we have also launched an online library providing free access to rare publications from the classical Jewish library. 

Today, more than ever, we require forward-looking decisions based on reliable data, clear priorities, and a precise understanding of the situation. Faith, unity, creativity, and modern technology will enable us to overcome any obstacles and recognize new opportunities within them. I am confident that together we will overcome these adversities and emerge from this global crisis even stronger.
