With the participation of the EAJC: a monument to Sholom Aleichem has been erected at TAU

With the participation and support of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC), a monument to the prominent Yiddish writer Sholom Aleichem was unveiled on the campus of Tel Aviv University. The official dedication ceremony took place on June 6, and was attended by the EAJC Director General, Dr. Haim Ben Yakov.

According to Dr. Ben Yakov, for the Jewish people, Sholom Aleichem is "not only an outstanding writer, but a representation of an entire cultural era, a civilization, and the complex fate of the people who read his books and spoke the language of his characters." "The legacy of Sholom Aleichem reflects the history of the Shtetl and its destruction during times of revolutions, wars, and the rise of new ideologies. It is also the story of the complex relationship between Hebrew and Yiddish cultures," Ben Yakov noted.

The Director General of the Congress also announced several new educational and academic programs dedicated to Yiddish culture in theater, music, and literature.

According to the creators and initiators of the monument, "the monument to Sholom Aleichem serves as an epilogue to the broader project of preserving Yiddish culture, while simultaneously paying tribute to its past," since "TAU can be defined as one of the leading modern centers of world Yiddish literature. The university offers language courses and hosts an annual festival featuring conferences, lectures, and concerts that attract thousands of participants."

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress places a high priority on preserving the cultural heritage of early 20th-century European Jewry. Notably, in the spring of 2022, with the support of the EAJC, the Enrico Strenger Jewish Museum at Tel Aviv University hosted "The Wanderings of ‘The Dybbuk’" exhibition, commemorating the centennial of the premiere of "The Dybbuk" at the Vakhtangov Theater in Moscow.
