Almaty to Commemorate Holocaust Victims

On January 27, Almaty will host an event commemorating the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and death camp. The event is organized by the Mitzvah Association of Jewish National Organizations of Kazakhstan, the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, and the United Nations Information Office.

During the Second World War, Kazakhstan provided refuge to numerous evacuees and refugees. Between August 1941 and January 1942 alone, nearly 400,000 individuals arrived in the Kazakh rear, 60% of whom were Jewish. Despite hardships, the Kazakh people shared their shelter and bread with those forced to flee their homes under the threat of death.

The tragedy of the Holocaust is unprecedented. It stands as the sole attempt in modern history to systematically and pragmatically annihilate an entire nation. It is our duty to preserve the memory of these tragic historical events and to impart to the younger generation a profound understanding of the horrific ordeal endured by the Jewish people. A nation's memory serves as the vital foundation for building a secure future.
