A wreath-laying ceremony was held in Jerusalem at the monument dedicated to the heroes of the Siege of Leningrad

Today, 27 January, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a wreath-laying ceremony took place in Jerusalem at the monument dedicated to the heroes of the Siege of Leningrad.

The "Memorial Candle" monument was unveiled during a solemn ceremony attended by Israeli and Russian state leaders in January of last year. In 2019, the initiator of the monument's creation, Leonid Litinetsky, approached the President of the EAJC, M.M. Mirilashvili, who warmly welcomed the initiative. The World War II Veterans Council and the Association of Survivors of the Siege of Leningrad in Israel also endorsed the project, and funding for its construction was co-provided by the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, the Russian Jewish Congress, the Board of Trustees of the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center in Moscow, the Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael - Jewish National Fund, and the Israeli Keren Hayesod fund.

This year, due to pandemic-related restrictions, attendance was strictly limited. The wreath-laying ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Jerusalem, Mr. Moshe Lion, the President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, Dr. Mikhail Mirilashvili, the Director General of JNF-KKL Eurasia, Mr. Igal Yasinov, the initiator of the monument, Leonid Litinetsky, representatives of the Siege of Leningrad Survivors Association, the Russian Jewish Congress, as well as representatives of Russian organizations and diplomats.
