Kazakhstan Hosts Convention of Rabbis from Former Soviet Republics

At the end of July, Almaty, Kazakhstan, hosted a major convention of Chabad rabbis. The convention gathered over two hundred rabbis representing 500 communities from nine countries: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Estonia, and Lithuania. This year’s annual conference was timed to coincide with the yahrzeit (anniversary of passing) on the 20th of Av of the 6th Lubavitcher Rebbe, Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, who passed away in Kazakhstan in 1944.

The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, addressed the convention participants with an official letter:

"Dear Conference Participants!

Levi Yitzchak Schneerson made an outstanding contribution to the spiritual culture of the Jewish people, becoming widely known both within our country and far beyond its borders. His disciples and followers live in many corners of the globe, preaching the path of righteousness and piety. Even during the severe trials that fell to his lot, Rabbi Schneerson remained faithful to the millennial traditions of the Jewish people and urged his like-minded followers never to depart from the laws of Judaism. Through his selfless service, he contributed to the establishment of spiritual and moral values, humanism, and solidarity among believers.

Following his teachings, the Jewish community of Kazakhstan remains true to the perennial ideals of mercy and love for one's neighbor, actively participating in fostering mutual respect and harmony in our country.

I am convinced that your community will continue to play a meaningful role in promoting interethnic and interfaith dialogue, as well as preserving the unity and cohesion of the people of Kazakhstan.

I wish you good health, peace and prosperity, inspiration, and patience in your tireless spiritual endeavors!"

Dr. Michael Mirilashvili, President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, also welcomed the convention participants:

"I wish you fruitful work at the convention and continued success in our shared mission of preserving and strengthening Jewish traditions and culture. The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress will continue to facilitate key initiatives contributing to the development of Jewish life across the Euro-Asian region."
