A Memorial to the Righteous Among the Nations and Holocaust Victims Has Dedicated in Melitopol

A solemn opening ceremony for the Memorial to the Righteous Among the Nations and Victims of the Holocaust took place in Melitopol. Under the "Righteous of My City" project, initiated by the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine, the "Lament for the Unborn" monument by sculptor Oleksandr Diachenko was recently dedicated on Hetmanska Street, the historical route along which Melitopol's Jewish residents were marched to their execution during the occupation. In total, over 14,000 civilians of Melitopol lost their lives during the war, including 12,000 Jews.

As part of the "Righteous of My City" initiative, 22 streets and one public square have been named in honor of the Righteous Among the Nations, and five memorial plaques have been erected in the towns and villages where those who rescued Jewish lives resided. The Melitopol Memorial is the latest landmark to join this list.

The Jewish Confederation of Ukraine operates under the leadership of Boris Lozhkin, Vice-President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress.
