EAJC Statement Regarding the UN's Failure to Adopt a Resolution Condemning Hamas

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, representing the Jewish communities of its 25 member states, expresses its profound disappointment in the United Nations General Assembly's failure to adopt a resolution condemning Hamas and other Gaza-based groups—globally designated as terrorist and extremist entities—for their acts of aggression against the civilian population of Israel.

Although the resolution secured the support of an absolute majority of General Assembly member states (87 members, including European Union nations and other key delegations), it failed to pass. Notably fewer states—only 57—voted against the resolution. However, the absence of 43 delegations during the vote gridlocked the General Assembly, as the rules of procedure for such a resolution require a two-thirds majority to pass.

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress notes with regret that indifference and passivity toward criminals recognized as terrorists by the United States, Japan, the European Union, and neighbouring Arab nations such as Jordan and Egypt, condone terrorism no less than direct support. It is this very indifference that rendered the General Assembly ineffective, establishing a troubling precedent: tomorrow, this same indifference could be turned against the civilian population of any UN member state.

Following the vote, EAJC President Mikhail Mirilashvili stated: "The United Nations General Assembly has had countless opportunities to demonstrate an objective stance regarding attacks on Israel, yet the UN has repeatedly failed to do so. We view this vote as the latest manifestation of bias against Israel and a clear double standard. We extend our gratitude to all member states that supported this crucial resolution."

"Hamas is a terrorist organization that effectively holds an innocent civilian population hostage, seeking to terrorize Israelis and destroy the State of Israel. It is long overdue for the international community to recognize the true nature of Hamas and condemn it in the strongest possible terms," Mirilashvili said.

"While we had hoped for a different outcome, we wish to take this opportunity to thank the United States for initiating the resolution. On behalf of the Jewish communities of the Euro-Asian region, we express our sincere appreciation to all those who voted in accordance with the voice of reason and conscience, standing in support of the Jewish people and the State of Israel," said EAJC President Mikhail Mirilashvili.
