Georgia

Georgian Jewry represents one of the oldest diaspora communities. According to Georgian historical tradition, the first Jewish settlements in Georgia date back to the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE. Throughout their long history in the region, Georgian Jews integrated deeply with local customs, particularly in terms of culture and language.

Georgia was historically recognized as a country where Jewish communities could live in peace, largely free from manifestations of antisemitism. Demonstrating this legacy, by 1979, nearly half of the 90 active synagogues in the Soviet Union were located within Georgia.

Today, the Jewish community in Georgia comprises native Georgian Jews as well as Russian-speaking Ashkenazi Jews. The primary community hub is located in Tbilisi. Active synagogues and community centers operate in Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi, Gori, Oni, Surami, Akhaltsikhe, and Vani. Additionally, the JFuture Jewish Sunday School provides educational programming in Tbilisi.
